A custom-made 3-button suit in Midnight Blue, also known as Dark Navy, is ideal for those seeking a formal look. It is a color tone just before black, appearing bluer under artificial light than traditional navy.
Often worn in the boardroom, but essentially suitable for any occasion.
This midnight blue suit features a full canvas construction of linen and horsehair (haircloth), 3 buttons, notch lapels, straight welt pockets, a double vent, functional sleeve buttons, and a Bemberg satin lining. The suit is logically handmade and requires approximately 40 hours of labor.
The fabric is a 340-gram twill from the John Cooper collection by Holland & Sherry.
Due to the wide variety of occasions for which a Midnight Blue tailored suit can be worn, ranging from weddings, parties, and formal dinners to business meetings and even funerals, it is a truly essential wardrobe piece.
Visual effect: You will be surprised by how much of a difference one extra button can make on a suit. The three-button jacket has shorter lapels and a less deep V (especially compared to the two-button version).
Who is a 3-button suit suitable for?
The three-button suit is slightly less accessible than its two-button counterpart. Usually, a specific body type is needed to showcase this type of suit properly.
Younger men who are on the thinner side may consider choosing a three-button style when getting a new suit made. This style also works well for people with an athletic body type.
If you are tall, +190cm, and have felt uncomfortable in a two-button suit, a three-button suit may be more flattering.
The top button of this suit is sometimes buttoned, the middle is always buttoned, and the bottom button is never fastened.
Midnight Blue as a Suit Color
Midnight Blue is a dark shade of blue named for its resemblance to the apparently blue color of a moonlit night sky around a full moon.
Midnight Blue is identifiable blue to the eye in sunlight or full-spectrum light but can appear black under certain more limited spectra sometimes found in artificial lighting (especially early 20th-century incandescent). It is similar to navy, which is also a dark blue.
Midnight Blue evokes feelings of stability, wisdom, and mystery.
Midnight Blue is considered to be beneficial for the mind and body. It slows down human metabolism and produces a calming effect.
When to wear: Because this jacket has you more buttoned up, it’s a great choice for more formal occasions. However, it’s not quite as popular a choice as the two-button jacket.
History of Three-Button Suits
Three-button jackets were created at the end of the 19th century. Of Edwardian inspiration, they were first omnipresent in England and worn in France by the dandies of the Third Republic (1870-1940).
In the 1960s, three-button jackets were abandoned in favor of two-button ones, which had appeared in the 1920s: their look was considered more sporty.
The Mods, however, brought the three-button jacket back into fashion by dressing in suits found in London thrift shops full of clothes from previous decades.
Inspired by this new silhouette, the Carnaby Street tailors, in total opposition to their Savile Row colleagues, developed a new cut of suit for young people in which the three-button jacket became essential.
Types of Three-Button Jackets
The Classic Three-Button Jacket:
the lapel roll only begins after the third button. The jacket closes higher, hides the tie a little more, and the lapel is shorter.
The Italian Three-Button Jacket (3 Roll 2 / Three Roll Two):
a hybrid jacket between the two-button and the three-button. The lapel roll begins just before the third button. The jacket can be worn as a two-button, in which case the lapel rolls and hides the third button. The Italian three-button jacket is more common on unstructured (unlined) jackets.
American Lapel:
the jacket has 3 buttons, but the third one is fake. It is constantly hidden by the roll of the lapel. It is the classic cut style of Ivy League students.
