A Bespoke Fox Hunting Coat: Craftsmanship with a Historic Foundation
In the world of traditional English riding and fox hunting, the "Hunting Pink" coat is more than just clothing; it is a symbol of heritage and functionality. This unique coat, created for a rider actively engaged in drag hunting, combines iconic style with the craftsmanship of De Oost. Based on a beloved yet unavailable coat, we utilized the last meters of Hunting Pink fabric to create a lighter, improved version specifically designed for the rigors of the field. Below, we dive into the history, distinctive design elements, and the exceptional craftsmanship that make this coat truly unique.
The History of "Hunting Pink"
The origins of the term "Hunting Pink" are deeply rooted in English hunting tradition. Despite the misleading term, it refers not to the color pink but to the bright red shade worn by the master of the hunt and whippers-in leading the hunt. Some believe the name originated from a well-known tailor, Mr. Pink, who first introduced these recognizable coats. Our client had a longtime favorite coat in this shade, and using the last meters of Bateman Ogden's global supply emphasizes the exclusivity and craftsmanship needed to recreate this coat.
Distinctive Design Elements: From Velvet Collar to Hand-Stitched Buttonholes
This Hunting Pink coat features subtle adjustments tailored specifically to meet the demands of the hunt:
Velvet Collar in "Elephant Grey": The collar color references the client’s hunt club and was specially sourced from an upholstery shop in Antwerp.
Gold Shank Buttons with Crest: These buttons, personally supplied by the client, add a personal touch and reference the hunt club’s insignia.
Back Seams for Riding Mobility: The seams along the back and waist create an elegant silhouette while providing flexibility for a forward seat, allowing the rider to move their arms freely while riding.
Single Vent for the Horse’s "Seat": This vent allows the coat to drape elegantly over the horse’s back, preserving both comfort and style while in the saddle.
Practical Design for Hunting Use: The full-canvas construction and hand-sewn buttonholes make this coat both durable and breathable—ideal for long days in the field.
Combined Fabrics for Functionality and Comfort
The combination of fabrics elevates this coat, perfectly suited for the intensity of the hunt:
Bateman Ogden Hunting Pink Twill: This fabric is exceptionally durable and breathable, essential for comfort during long hunting days in rugged conditions.
Grey Velvet Collar: In a classic "Elephant Grey," a subtle yet elegant nod to the client’s club.
Waterproof Cotton Lining from Holland & Sherry: Lining the coat from the hem to mid-back, this waterproof cotton protects against rain and mud, an essential feature on rainy field days.
Tatterstall Wool Lining: The upper half of the coat is lined with Tatterstall wool, which is warm and has a classic look, perfectly complementing the English countryside style.
Tailored for Hunting and Equestrian Use
In constructing this coat, we considered the specific requirements of hunting, such as sufficient space in the shoulders and sleeves, allowing the wearer freedom of movement and a comfortable position in the "two-point" or "forward seat" stance. These elements ensure the coat is not only stylish and elegant but also highly functional and suited for intensive fox hunting.
The Difference Between Bespoke and Ready-to-Wear
This coat embodies bespoke craftsmanship at its finest. The crafting took approximately 40 hours, with an additional 5 hours dedicated to meticulously measuring and refining every detail. By replicating and enhancing an existing coat, we demonstrate the difference between off-the-rack and true bespoke tailoring, where thorough knowledge and expertise are paramount. With this coat, the client experiences the comfort and precision of a garment perfectly aligned with their hunting experience.
