How do you choose the right colour wedding suit as a groom
Which colour wedding suit will you choose and how do you decide? These are questions that every groom asks. In this blog I would like to explain a number of points and provide examples to facilitate your search and prevent choice stress.
What are good colors for a wedding suit?
Blue is the most popular wedding suit colour
Blue wedding suits are still the most popular choice. But the colours and tones of wedding suits vary increasingly and range from classic navy blue, ice blue, royal blue, air force blue to midnight blue and everything in between. If you choose a bespoke suit, you have complete freedom of choice regarding colour and fabric.
Other colours of wedding suits
You also see more and more other colours, especially red, green and brown coloured wedding suits.
But colours that were previously worn less often and therefore perhaps create a more pronounced atmosphere in the wedding style, such as purple, salmon, ivory, cream, burnt orange, fuchsia and ochre, are increasingly seen as choices for the colour of the wedding suit. .
Combining colours with the wedding suit and waistcoat
You can of course also choose not to have the entire suit made in one colour. A popular option for the groom who is looking for colour in his suit but also wants to be able to wear it afterwards is to ensure that the waistcoat has a distinctive colour. This way you have an eye-catcher to combine with fabric and colour, but you can also wear the often blue suit afterwards.
Any colour wedding suit is possible
So you can actually wear any color you want, after all it is your outfit on your day. The most important thing is that you feel good in your wedding suit and that you radiate that so that you are not concerned with your suit during the wedding and afterwards you have beautiful memories to look back on.
Which points influence the color of your wedding suit?
The colour of your wedding suit is not only determined by the paint/pigments used in the fabric, but also by other elements that influence the appearance of your wedding suit colour.
Fabric & Texture
Fabrics consist of threads that are woven into a cloth. How these threads are woven determines the texture / structure and this gives a certain feeling to a fabric. A smooth fabric appears very different from a tweed and therefore also the colour. You may like a blue suit with a smooth fabric but not like the same colour in a thick English Tweed or Flannel.
Type of Material
You can have a wedding suit made in all kinds of materials. A wedding suit made of wool, linen, cotton, bamboo, anything is possible. But each type of material has its own fiber structure, which means that colour pigments adhere differently and display colours differently. And here too, one fabric evokes a different feeling and idea than the other for your wedding suit.
Quality of the fabric
By the quality of the fabric I mean how much time and attention has been spent on weaving and dyeing the fabric. The higher the price, the better the colour. This mainly has to do with what kind of water the yarns, threads and fabric are washed in, whether this is done industrially or by hand, the colour pigments themselves, whether the colouring is done per cloth or per thread and the knowledge and experience of the fabric weaving industry. A well-coloured fabric remains beautiful for much longer and has a deeper colour tone than a cheaper one.
How to combine wedding suit colour with shirt, shoes and accessories?
When choosing the right colour shirt, shoes and tie, for example, it is wise to follow a number of basic rules.
1. The darker the suit, the more contrast there is with other lighter colored parts that you wear with your wedding suit. You can of course also turn this around. The key is that your suit can be seen as a frame of a painting and your shirt and accessories are the canvas that hangs in it. What do you want to stand out, but everything won't work?
2. Make sure that colours and colour tones really differ. Otherwise it looks like you did a bad wash and your clothes are discoloured. That's why a white shirt always works.
If you wear the same colours, make sure that the structure and pattern of the fabric differ. This is called layering and it gives you nuanced, beautiful differences that people unconsciously perceive. The colours and patterns reinforce each other without making your wedding suit look restless.
If you want something extravagant in your wedding suit or related outfits, choose 1 part. So if you want to wear a colorful pocket square, don't wear bright green velvet loafers. It's not a carnival but your wedding.
Groom's skin and hairstyle
Personally, I think you should wear what you like. But one colour suits one person better than another and that is due to the colour of the skin and hair. So make sure that the colour does not overpower you, so that you do not stand out and put your face in the spotlight. You want to see the groom wearing a nice coloured wedding suit, not a coloured wedding suit with someone in it.
The location and season of the wedding
The colour of your wedding suit should also be tailored to the location and season. A woolly and fluffy wedding suit in the summer at a summer chic wedding isn't it. It is better to choose a beautiful breathable fabric in a more summery colour, such as a fabric of fine mohair or summer wool with linen in a light sand or stone colour, for example.
The trick is simply to see which colours you encounter in nature per season. If you get married in the autumn, brown and orange tones work very nicely, see the leaves. If you get married in the summer, brighter colours and pastel shades can be beautiful, see the flowers and the sky.
The same applies to the location and colour of your wedding suit. If you are getting married in a Gothic church, a classic dark blue that appears subdued is perhaps better than a bright royal blue that fits better with a wedding in Capri where the sea has this colour.
It remains a matter of taste, but common sense is and remains important. Don't drive yourself crazy by completely fixating on one colour and completely forgetting other things such as the quality of the wedding suit, the fit and the model.
How do you ensure that the colour of your wedding suit matches the bride or groom?
As long as your bride wears a white, ivory or cream coloured dress, you can contribute any colour wedding suit. This is because she stands out the most. If the bride is wearing a dress in a different colour, it is important to take a piece of fabric with you when you determine the colour of your wedding suit so that you can see whether the colour, tone and structure match each other.
If you are both getting married in suits, it is important to decide in advance whether you want to match in terms of wedding suit colour, i.e. use the same color palette, or choose each person's own taste and colour for the wedding suit.
For example, you can still choose the waistcoat or accessories in the same colour so that you create a nice colour combination. This is also a matter of looking and comparing and following your feelings.
