In 1915 Herbert Brown founded a weaving company called Brown& Sons (Bramley) Ltd. The company started to weave fabrics for the military, police and fire services.
From modest beginnings, the company soon profited from the revolution in bulk garment manufacturing in Leeds, Yorkshire. The company began to supply the factories with large amounts of cloth and became well-known for worsted fabrics of a mix-and-match standard for the ready-made suit market.
In 1952 the company was re-named Alfred Brown (WorstedMills) Ltd and had an office in London’s West End at Golden House. Selling with an agent in London, Alfred Brown became established among London tailors and retailers. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s third generation Alfred, Peter and David Brown firmly embedded the name in the UK High-Street stores and began to export worldwide.
